The Archive of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2024. Today, it is the largest archival institution in Kazakhstan. At the time of its creation in 1994, it contained 555,000 storage units, now, at the beginning of 2024 the volume of archival data has grown to more than 1.5 million. For almost a third of a century, the most important documents of the modern history of Kazakhstan have been collected and carefully preserved in the Archive. These include the activities of the new political institutions of the Independence period - the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Presidential Administration, as well as state bodies directly subordinate and accountable to the Head of State. A unique group of records is the archival funds of the predecessors of the Archive of the President - the Central State Archive of Modern History, the party archives of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan, and the Almaty Regional Party Committee. All of these unique documents contain evidence of the tectonic changes in the political, economic, and socio-cultural context of the Soviet era starting from 1917. The Republic's Independence strengthened public interest in the history of Kazakhstan. Against the background of Independence, identifying particularly valuable and unique documents for inclusion in the National Archival Fund, which is stored in the Archive of the President has become even more pressing. Currently, more than 120 000 units of particularly valuable documents are stored here. Among them are documents on the history of the famine of the 1920-1930s, mass repressions of the 1930s, deportations, historical figures considered "enemies of the people" during Soviet times, and many others. The Archive’s staff continues to work to identify the most informative documents that reflect the essence and characteristics of historical processes. According to the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On the National Archival Fund and Archives", these documents are classified as particularly valuable due to their enduring historical, cultural and scientific value, representing particular importance for society and the state. This has led to a progressive expansion of the thematic composition of the “List of Especially Valuable Documents of the Archives.” Such expansion has also become possible as a result of the declassification of documents from the funds of Communist Party organs ("special files", etc.). The Album, which is the first of its kind, allows readers to access, in a single volume, some of the most important documents from the Archive of the President in the form of scans of the original documents. Therefore, readers have the opportunity to see the documentary sources “live” and to examine not only their textual, but also their physical features. The Album contains 70 especially valuable documents that reveal the events of national history at its various stages. The documentary chronicle begins with the recollections of eyewitnesses and participants in the national liberation uprising of 1916. Next, documents from the Soviet period, illustrate, among other things, the tragic events of famine and political repressions, social and ethnic deportations, acts of heroism by ordinary people during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, and the development of the national economy and culture. The selection ends with one of the most important documents in the modern history of Kazakhstan - the Declaration of State Sovereignty dated October 25, 1990. The publication includes original documents, most of which are published in their entirety. Some documents, due to their significant volume (multi-page texts), are published in abridged form and include only the most important excerpts. However, readers can still access the full text of the documents in digital format. Modern technology makes it possible to go beyond the physical book and, by scanning the QR code, access the full form of the documents, which are posted on the Archive’s website. Most of the documents found in this Album are published here for the first time. The collection is arranged in chronological order, with the exception of some thematic selections, such as official documents of famous historical figures, etc. Annotations provide additional context including the the date and place where the event occurred. In addition, at the end of the Album, there is a list of documents, accompanied by legends indicating the fonds, inventory, and file where the documents are housed in the archive. This project is aimed at a wide audience and is designed to show the full diversity of documents in the National Archival Fund of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The compilers hope that the Album, by highlighting the collection of especially valuable documents in the Archive of the President will serve as an invitation to their deeper study and understanding.
