Exploring Japan's archives

Fr om December 2 to 4, 2024, the Deputy Directors of Archive of the President, R. Karibzhanova and J. Abdikadyrova, had a working visit to Tokyo at the invitation of the National Archives of Japan. The visit aimed to exchange experiences with Japanese archives, particularly regarding the application of new technologies in document restoration, conservation, digitization, and working with electronic records. On December 2, the Archive delegation met with the President of the National Archives of Japan, Mr. Kaoru Kamata. The meeting focused on exchanging information about the activities of both institutions, developing partnerships, and implementing joint projects. Additionally, the delegation toured the archive storage facilities and document restoration laboratory, wh ere they participated in masterclasses on preparing special adhesives and restoring damaged paper-based documents. On December 3, the delegation was introduced to Japan’s National Parliamentary Library.

Later that day, they visited the Tsukuba branch of the National Archives of Japan and met with the branch director, Mr. Iwama. The visit included tours of the archive’s facilities and reviews of fumigation and cataloging processes. On December 4, the delegation met with Mr. Umehara, Director of the Archival Affairs Department of the National Archives of Japan, to study practices in digitization and electronic document preservation. The delegation also presented an overview of the activities of the Archive of the President, highlighting its main functions, ongoing research projects, and opportunities for collaboration. The knowledge and experience gained during the visit regarding document restoration, preservation, and digitization will be adapted and integrated into the operations of the Archive of the President. Established professional contacts will facilitate joint projects in archival management and strengthen international cooperation.
