Day of Remembrance of Victims of Political Repression and Famine

Today Archive of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan held round table on the topic “History of political repression: through the prism of documents”, dedicated to May 31 - the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repression and Famine in Kazakhstan. The event was attended by scientists, historians, teachers of higher educational institutions, and archivists. During the opening of the round table, the director of the Archive of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, A. Mustafina in her speech noted, that the archives face an important task in ensuring the safety of documents revealing the history of repression. She emphasized, that in recent years, researchers have become more interested in the history of political repression in Kazakhstan, which is largely due to the introduction of previously inaccessible archival materials into scientific circulation. The Center for the Study of Materials of Political Repression of the 20th Century of the Archive is working on processing received documents concerning the fate of victims of repression. While this is itself a complex, labor-intensive process, archive staff are already working on assessing the value of these documents for inclusion in the National Archives Fund. Further work on introduction of this layer of documents into scientific circulation will be carried out jointly with scientists and researchers.

Sarsenbina - researchers from the Institute of State History, T.Konyratbaeva - Doctor of Philology, Professor of the International Kazakh-Turkish University n.a. Khoja Akhmet Yasawi, G. Nurymbetova - head of the Center for the Study of Materials of Political Repression of the 20th Century of the Archive of the President, B. Zhanguttin and Sh. Nurman – associate professors of the Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University, A. Utegalieva - Associate Professor of the Kazakh State Women's Pedagogical University, A. Mukhambedyarova - professor at Turan University and D. Ryskildinova - senior lecturer at Almaty University of Energy and Communications n. a. G. Daukeev. Summing up the round table, the participants focused on the large-scale work done by scientists and archivists to study the “blank spots” in the history of the period of mass political repression of the last century, and wished that future generations would never encounter such dark events again. As part of the round table, participants got acquainted with the historical and documentary exhibition “Elimnin esil erleri (Great sons of my country): S. Seifullin, T. Ryskulov, B. Mailin,” prepared on the basis of documents from the funds of the Archive of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
