Participation in the International Seminar of the National Archives of Japan

In 2024, a delegation from the Archive of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan made a working visit to the National Archives of Japan in Tokyo, where they familiarized themselves with archival storage facilities and modern technologies for document restoration, conservation, and digitization. Professional cooperation between the archives of Kazakhstan and Japan continued through participation in an international online seminar. On January 31, 2025, employees of the Archive of the President took part in the international seminar “Preservation and Conservation of Paper-based Archival Materials”, organized by the National Archives of Japan. The seminar program consisted of two sessions. The first session, “Preservation Management of Archival Materials in a Hot and Humid Environment”, focused on the risks associated with changing storage environment. Presentations on this topic were delivered by Tran Viet Hoa, Director of National Archives Center No. 3, Department of State Records and Archives of Vietnam; Wiwi Diana Sari, Director of Preservation and Protection on Archives at the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia; and Timoci Balenaivalu, Principal Archivist of the National Archives of Fiji and President of PARBICA.

During the second session, “Response and Recovery from Water Damage to Archival Materials”, participants discussed the experience of restoring documents affected by floods. Experts from Malaysia and the Pacific region respectivelty, Qahera binti Alian and Brandon Oswald, shared recommendations on salvaging paper-based records and developing disaster response plans. Additionally, remarks and expert opinions on discussed topics were provided by Aoki Mutsumi, former associate professor at the National Institute of Japanese Literature, and Asaba Saho, Head of the Conservation Department at the National Archives of Japan. We extend our gratitude to the National Archives of Japan and all seminar speakers. Participation in the event allowed employees of the Archive of the President to gain valuable knowledge from the experience of foreign colleagues, and their presentations made a lasting impression.
